One of the first things people think about when they become interested in scuba diving is the equipment.
And usually, the thought process goes something like this:
“Do I need to buy all of that before I can start?”
The answer is simple.
No.
In fact, you can start scuba diving without owning a single piece of equipment.
At DIVENESS, what we tell new divers is that the only things you need to bring are your flip-flops, swimsuit, towel — and most importantly, your smile. Because proper training doesn’t start with equipment. It starts with attitude.
During your first steps, whether you’re doing a Discover Scuba Diving experience or starting your first certification course, all the necessary equipment is provided by the dive center.
That means:
All you need is the willingness to give it a try.
Your instructor will take care of everything else.
Even though you don’t need to buy it right away, it’s helpful to understand what basic scuba equipment includes.
Because that’s how you begin to better understand the diving experience.
The equipment can be simply divided into two categories:
This category includes the core components of scuba diving:
These are the more “technical” pieces of equipment, but there’s no reason to be intimidated by them.
In practice, they’re much easier to use than most people imagine.
These are the more “personal” pieces of equipment:
This is the equipment that directly affects how comfortable you feel underwater.
This is where many people make a mistake.
They think they need to buy equipment before they even start diving.
In reality, the right timing is different.
You should buy equipment when:
Because then your choices will be based on real experience.
Not theory.
It’s also important to evaluate what kind of diver you’re going to be.
Will you be the diver who completes 30 to 50 dives per year, or the diver who completes only 4 to 5 dives per year?
You can probably see that in the first case, it makes perfect sense to invest in your own equipment, since the return on that investment will come relatively quickly.
In the second case, there is really no reason to spend even one euro buying your own gear. You can simply rent the necessary equipment whenever you dive and you’ll be perfectly fine.
Most divers don’t buy all their equipment at once.
They usually start with the more personal items:
Then, if they continue diving regularly, they gradually move on to other equipment, with the next common purchase usually being a dive computer.
This isn’t only about cost.
It’s about experience.
The more you dive, the better you understand what you actually need.
You should carefully research before investing your money in something you may not need, or in something that you may never fully understand why you paid so much for.
Equipment pricing increases according to features and capabilities.
Therefore, discuss your needs with a diving professional you trust and purchase the equipment that truly matches your diving goals.
There is a major misconception about scuba diving.
Many people believe it’s an activity that requires a lot of equipment before you can even begin.
In reality, the opposite is true.
Scuba diving is one of the few activities where you can start fully equipped without having purchased anything.
And that gives you a huge advantage:
You can try it first.
Feel it.
And then decide.
One very important factor to understand when considering the purchase of your own diving equipment—without this acting as any kind of pressure—is that once you own your equipment and become familiar with it after a few dives, you can focus much more effectively on developing your diving skills.
For example:
It is perfectly logical that every time you dive with rental equipment from a dive center, you’ll need some time to adapt to it.
Not all wetsuits fit the same.
Not all brands design their BCDs the same way.
Not all regulators feel identical.
Using familiar equipment removes one variable from the equation and allows you to concentrate on becoming a better diver.
Got the tip?
You don’t need equipment to start scuba diving.
You only need the decision to give it a try.
The equipment will be there.
The guidance will be there.
The experience will be there.
And when the time comes to take the next step, you’ll know exactly what you need.
Not because someone told you.
But because you’ve already lived it.
